Post 4—Active and Passive Learning

Through the study of the course, I learned: a large number of studies show that active learning technology often leads to higher performance and long-term recall of skills and facts than passive learning technology.

Active learning and passive learning are two styles or methods to acquire knowledge and skills in the process of learning. In the era of modern education, most institutions, from primary school to university, advocate active learning as a more effective method, and try to eliminate or limit passive learning among students. Although the effectiveness of active learning is well documented and proven, the same institutions seem unable to eliminate the traditional method described as passive learning, leading to a debate about which method is better. It has also been suggested that the two methods are complementary, and the problem is more about where, when, where and how to apply each specific method.

I personally think that courses with more academic knowledge are more suitable for active learning, such as psychology, mathematics and so on. But like foreign language learning courses or art related courses, passive learning is better. Because for such courses, divergent thinking and its application to real life are more important.

My experience of Gamification :I took a Spanish course in Camosun College, which was difficult for me. My professor is a young woman. Her teaching method is d interesting. In the first half of the course, she will explain Spanish words and grammar. In the second half of the course, she will open the game based course mode. She often gives cards with different Spanish words to each group. People choose these cards at random and then chat with other group members. They use the words on the cards to have a simple conversation. She will also ask people to make speeches based on their own life experiences, and use Spanish to tell the interesting things in their lives for the group members. I think this will greatly improve my enthusiasm for language learning. Instead of feeling particularly boring, I will have more opportunities to chat with my classmates. Because language learning has more opportunities to communicate with people, it is also a good way to exercise.
